The Town of Mammoth Lakes CA is centrally located in the
picturesque Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains in California, three
hours south of Reno, Nevada, and five hours north of Los Angeles
and about 5 hours from Las Vegas. It all depends on how many stops
you make and how much food in the car you want to consume!
Driving Instructions are easy and the drive in daylight is spectacular
especially through Red Rock Canyon, although hard core Mammoth
fans drive at night so they won't miss one of our 300 days of
sunshine.
MAMMOTH TRANSPORTATION
Driving to Mammoth Lakes is a straight shot from Los Angeles or Reno Nevada on Highway 395. It takes about 5+ hours from Los Angeles and 3.5 hours from Reno. The drive is easy in the warmer months. In the winter months when snow is abundant you will need 4WD vehicles equipped with all season tires (mud /snow) or a 2 wheel drive with cables /chains. You will absolutely need them and the highway patrol checks so don't come up with out them. Don't worry about putting them on. The experts will be on the side of the road to help you during any storm day. So you can stay warm and toasty in your car
AIRLINE FLIGHTS TO MAMMOTH
Mammoth is increasing the amount of flights everyday. You can fly direct via one of the
Mammoth Airlines on Horizon Airlines or United Airlines from 5 different airports in California. San Franciscom San Jose, Los Angeles International, Orrange County and San Diego. Book your airline tickets online as soon as possible as the planes only hold 66 passengers and are filled on most days.
BUS TRANSPORTATION
From Los Angeles there is no direct bus route at the moment. So traveling by bus is a bit challenging. There are various tour bus groups that offer rides if they haven't sold a ski/snow package and they have space. You should contact them direct.
TOWN TRANSPORTATION
All town transportation is free. The Town recently started their year round shuttle bus transportation. This is the current
schedule of pick ups and stops. The ski shuttles run more often during the daytime, and then slow down as the night progresses. There are also special buses when events come to town. Feet First! In Mammoth, we don't want you to use your car.
TIP: In the winter you will need tire chains. They are
cheaper at home than in Mammoth or one of the local towns and more likely
to be in stock. Get them at your favorite Auto Parts Store. They must fit your tires exactly. Again, you
will need them. Travel Smart!
